Nawal Ja’ Cooperative

Nawal Ja’ is a weaving cooperative formed by ten women artisans dedicated to preserving the intricate tradition of backstrap brocade weaving. This meticulous technique—defined by precision, rhythm, and deep embodied knowledge—is traditionally used to create huipiles, garments that function as cultural markers of identity and place. Each piece can take between one and three months to complete, reflecting the extraordinary level of care embedded in every thread.

The women of Nawal Ja’ work from their homes, weaving alongside the responsibilities of daily life. Beyond their looms, they are caretakers—tending to their families, their land, and the seasonal demands of farming. These rhythms dictate when weaving can take place, making flexibility not just a preference, but a necessity. Weaving provides a vital source of supplemental income, allowing the artisans to support their households while maintaining autonomy over their time.

Documenting Nawal Ja’ revealed weaving as an act of balance—between tradition and survival, patience and labor, individuality and collective care. Here, preservation is sustained through cooperation, and heritage endures not through urgency, but through continuity.
