Corazón de Mujeres

The Corazón de Mujeres (Hearts of Women) weaving community is formed by thirteen artisans, brought together through craft, resilience, and shared history. The collective was founded during Guatemala’s armed conflict, at a time when many women were forced to flee their homes. In this context, Corazón de Mujeres emerged as both a place of refuge and a means of survival—offering safety, solidarity, and the opportunity to support their families through weaving.

What distinguishes this community is its diversity. Each artisan comes from a different region and brings with her a unique weaving technique, shaped by her own cultural and geographic background. Rather than working in isolation, the women share their knowledge openly, teaching one another and rotating techniques to ensure that work is distributed evenly and sustainably across the group.

This collaborative model allows multiple traditions to coexist within a single body of work. Patterns, structures, and methods intersect—creating textiles that are not the product of a single lineage, but of collective memory and mutual support. In Corazón de Mujeres, preservation does not rely on uniformity, but on exchange. Documenting this community revealed weaving as an act of resistance as much as creation. The loom becomes a tool for continuity, dignity, and empowerment—one that transforms personal histories of displacement into a shared language of strength and care. Each piece stands as evidence of what can be sustained when knowledge is protected collectively and tradition is carried forward together.
