RB Curated—Gudi

[2025]

San Antonio Palopó
Guatemala

Gudi

In San Antonio Palopó, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, we met Gudi, a second-generation foot loom weaver and the youngest artisan RB Curated collaborates with. Supporting the next generation of weavers is essential to preserving Guatemala’s textile heritage, and Gudi embodies this commitment through a rare balance of respect for tradition and openness to experimentation.

Gudi works from his family’s weaving workshop, located on the top floor of their home—an elevated space filled with natural light and sweeping views of the lake and its surrounding volcanoes. The landscape is ever-present in his process, offering both rhythm and inspiration. Creativity runs deep in his family: while Gudi focuses on foot loom weaving, his siblings practice painting, backstrap weaving, and ceramics, collectively sustaining a shared artistic legacy.

In communities like San Antonio Palopó, weaving is not merely a technique but a way of transmitting identity, history, and belonging. This tradition is most visibly expressed through huipiles—garments that function as living archives of place and lineage, often requiring up to six months to complete. Each piece carries encoded stories of territory, ancestry, and community. Yet economic pressures have increasingly placed these traditions at risk. Many women are forced to sell their own huipiles—garments never intended for commerce—stripping them of context and symbolic value. This project emerges as a direct response to that reality: to document, respect, and preserve these processes as they exist from within, honoring the artisans not only through the objects they create, but through the time, knowledge, and lives woven into every thread.

About RB Curated

RB Curated is an interiors brand founded by Regan Billingsley, an interior designer based in Washington whose practice centers on cultural preservation, craftsmanship, and human connection. Through direct collaboration with artisan communities across Guatemala and Latin America, the brand creates limited-edition pieces that honor time, tradition, and the hand that makes them. For Regan, true luxury is not defined by abundance, but by heritage, process, and long-term relationships built on respect and trust. As part of this project, we had the privilege of traveling to each of the communities where RB Curated works, immersing ourselves in the environments where these pieces are conceived and made. Some of the artisans we were meeting for the first time, while others we had the opportunity to reconnect with. In every location, we documented their work within their personal spaces—homes and workshops where daily life and creation coexist—allowing us to photograph not only the objects, but the people, rhythms, and atmospheres that give them meaning.
